Biography: Mr. Bert Ubamadu

Deputy Mission Director, 

USAID Kenya and East Africa

 

Bert Ubamadu arrived in Nairobi on May 31, 2021, as the Deputy Mission Director for USAID/Kenya and East Africa. Previously, Bert served as a Senior Resident Legal Officer for USAID/Ethiopia and covered South Sudan, Djibouti, and the USAID/Africa Union Mission from August 9, 2019 to May 31, 2021.

Bert was named Coordinator of the Addis Prosper Africa Deal Team (Addis PADT) by the Ambassador and charged, along with other Addis PADT members, with rebuilding Ethiopian prosperity after the recession caused by COVID-19 and internal conflicts. Prior to this, Bert served as a Senior Resident Legal Officer for the USAID/Kenya and the East Africa Mission from July 9, 2015 to August 9, 2019. Bert led a three lawyer RLO Office that provided legal support to three operating units: Kenya, Somalia, and East Africa Regional, which implemented a combined annual budget of $595 million and a portfolio valued at over $3 billion. Prior to serving in Kenya, Bert was the RLO for USAID/Nigeria.

Prior to becoming an RLO, Bert served as the legal advisor for the Development Credit Authority (DCA) Guarantee Program at USAID. Bert has over 25 years of global emerging market project development, finance, and private sector experience. Prior to joining USAID, Bert served as the Managing Director of Fairmont Capital Strategy Group, LLC, where his practice was focused on providing strategic advisory and financing services for African firms and banks. Prior to working at Fairmont CSG, Bert was at the Export-Import Bank of the United States where he worked on large project and trade finance transactions in Africa. Bert has also worked as a senior attorney at Marriott International, Pillsbury Madison Sutro Law Firm and has lectured on political risk and project finance transactions in emerging markets at the Washington College of Law at American University.

Bert received his law degree from the University of California at Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law and holds a Master’s degree in International Public Policy from the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy.
